Jul. 1--LIBERTYTOWN -- Police continued to investigate an armed robbery Tuesday afternoon at the PNC Bank at the corner of Md. 75 and Md. 26.
AAbout 3:30 p.m., a man displayed a handgun and he and a woman took an undisclosed amount of cash, according to Maryland State Police.
Trooper First Class Rob North said the couple fled the area on foot, south of the bank.
Police think the suspects may have driven off in a vehicle after fleeing from the bank. A search of the area by canine units and a helicopter detected no signs of them, North said.
"Libertytown Park was clear," he said.
The search lasted about 20 minutes, during which a handful of passers-by walked up to the crime scene tape encircling the bank's parking lot to ask about the helicopter and the police.
Police told bank staff to stay in the building so they could be questioned, North said.
A man, whose wife is a PNC employee in the bank, stood outside the crime scene and asked police if his wife was all right. Police told him she was fine.
Speaking at the scene shortly after the robbery, North said the crime scene unit's investigation would take two or more hours.
Surveillance cameras in the bank were to be checked and details about the robbery were expected to be released this morning after detectives reviewed the evidence, North said.
