Jul. 3--The Fourth of July wouldn't be the same without fireworks. But before the ooh-ing and ahh-ing begins, there are a few safety tips that people should keep in mind.
Thomas Streeter, Fire Marshal Chief of Columbus Fire and Emergency Medical Services, said the first thing to remember is that exploding-type fireworks are illegal in Georgia.
However, residents can enjoy sparkler-type fireworks.
"No pop, bang or boom," Streeter said about which fireworks are illegal.
Even though sparklers don't shoot into the air, there still are precautions to take when lighting them.
Streeter said there always should be adult supervision, adding that approximately 2,600 children under the age of 14 suffered fireworks-related injuries last year nationwide.
Alabama Forestry Commission Investigator Cliff Cobb said to have a water source nearby "to help suppress in case of a fire."
"Don't shoot (fireworks) on top of a house if (it's) surrounded by trees, leaves and pine straw," Cobb said. "And be personally safe -- don't toss them at anyone or hold in your hand. Just because the fuse is long doesn't mean it won't burn quickly."
Possession and use of exploding-type fireworks is a misdemeanor in Georgia, Columbus police Maj. Julius Graham said. It's an offense that carries a fine and possible jail time.
"We encourage individuals ... to participate in an activity that it is an organized event by a licensed person," Graham said.
"We anticipate having fires from fireworks," Cobb said. "We're praying people be careful with fireworks."
