THURSDAY: Labor Department releases weekly jobless claims, 8:30 a.m.; Commerce Department releases wholesale trade inventories for May, 10 a.m.; Freddie Mac, the mortgage finance company, releases weekly mortgage rates; House Financial Services subcommittee hearing on the role of the Federal Reserve in the president's proposed financial overhaul.

FRIDAY: Commerce Department releases international trade for May, 8:30 a.m.; House Financial Services Committee hearing on derivatives and the president's proposed financial overhaul.

MONDAY, July 6:

Washington - President Barack Obama in Moscow for talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Through July 8.

Washington - Congress scheduled to return from its holiday break.

Phoenix - The Arizona Legislature convenes for a special session called by Gov. Jan Brewer following her veto of parts of a budget passed on July 1.

New York - The Institute for Supply Management releases its services sector index for June.

TUESDAY, July 7:

Denver - Colorado Oil and Gas Association Rocky Mountain Energy Epicenter Conference. Through July 9.

WEDNESDAY, July 8:

Washington - President Barack Obama attends the Group of Eight summit in L'Aquila, Italy. He also leads a meeting on energy and climate. Through July 10.

New Orleans - The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals hears the case that a student in Texas filed against the Waxahachie Independent School District after he was barred from wearing a "John Edwards '08" T-shirt to school.

Detroit - The National Federation of the Blind closes its annual convention.

New York - Alcoa Inc. reports second quarter financial results.

THURSDAY, July 9:

Washington - House Financial Services subcommittee hearing on the role of the Federal Reserve in the president's proposed financial overhaul.

Cortez, Colo. - Montezuma County District Court hearing for Jeremiah Berry, charged with killing and dismembering his father. If no plea deal reached, judge will set trial date.

Virginia Beach, Va. - Scheduled hearing for retired NFL star Bruce Smith on a drunken driving charge.

New York - Retailers report sales results.

San Ramon, Calif. - Chevron Corp. reports second quarter financial results.

FRIDAY, July 10:

Washington - President Barack Obama meets with Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican before visiting Ghana and meeting with President John Atta Mills. Through July 11.

Washington - House Financial Services Committee hearing on derivatives and the president's proposed financial overhaul.

Silverton, Colo. - Runners from 27 states and six countries participate in 100-mile Hardrock Hundred Endurance run. Through July 12.

Las Vegas - NBA Summer League. Through July 19.
