Family Dollar Stores Inc., up $3.43 at $31.18

The discount retailer's profit grew as recession-struck consumers hit its stores, and its year forecast beat analysts' expectations.

NRG Energy Inc., up $1.27 at $23.35

The power company rejected Exelon's sweetened takeover bid, saying it was worth more, and boosted its profit outlook for the year.

Steak n Shake Co., up $1.17 at $9.28

The fast-food chain said customer traffic grew 13.4 percent in its third quarter, fueling same-store sales by 5 percent.

Las Vegas Sands Corp., down 25 cents at $6.65

The heavily-indebted casino operator said it may use an IPO of its Macau division and asset sales to raise between $3.5 and $4 billion.

Alcoa Inc., up 5 cents at $9.46

Analysts expect the aluminum producer, which is seen as a bellwether for the broader economy, to report a second quarter loss.

IntercontinentalExchange Inc., down $12.83 at $85.20

Government regulators will hold hearings on whether to oversee energy trading, which takes place at the futures exchange operator.

The defense contractor won a $1.5 billion Afghanistan support services contract from the Army, which could be worth more if extended.
