Waste Management, a provider of comprehensive waste management services, has announced its intent to develop a landfill gas to energy facility at its Rolling Meadows landfill in Illinois. Westar Energy has agreed to purchase the clean, renewable power for use by its customers.
Waste Management has said that the facility will produce up to 6MW of energy, enough to power the equivalent of up to 6,000 homes. The facility is expected to deliver electricity to Westar by 2010.
The company has said that the landfill gas, produced when micro-organisms break down organic material in the landfill, is composed of approximately 50% to 60% methane and 40% to 50% CO2.
Bill Moore, president and CEO of Westar Energy, said: "Our agreement with Waste Management represents a wonderful opportunity for Westar to receive another source of renewable energy for our customers and gain experience with base load distributed generation. We are pleased to be part of delivering clean energy from a source that would otherwise just be a waste byproduct."
