Jul. 22--Indianapolis drug maker Eli Lilly and Co. saw across-the-board gains in revenue and net income during its fiscal second quarter and raised its per-share guidance for 2009.

Lilly, the fifth-largest biotech company in the U.S., based on sales, with such products as Humalog and Byetta for diabetes, Forteo for osteoporosis and Xigris for sepsis, reported net income of $1.15 billion, a 21 percent jump from the $958 million earned in the same period in 2008.

Earnings per share rose to $1.06 from 88 cents a year ago.

"Lilly continues to deliver solid financial results notwithstanding the challenging global economic environment," said John Lechleiter, Lilly's chairman and chief executive officer, in a statement accompanying the company's earnings report. "Our business remained strong in the second quarter, with volume-driven revenue growth, good operating leverage and double-digit EPS growth."

Lechleiter noted that sales of its drugs Cymbalta and Alimta were "particularly noteworthy" during the quarter, while movements in foreign exchange rates led to an improved gross margin percent.

He also touted Lilly's future potential -- namely, the 66 molecules in clinical development and recent regulatory approvals, most notably Effient in the U.S. Earlier this month the Food and Drug Administration gave the green light for Lilly to market Effient, a blood thinner it had spent more than a decade developing.

In the second quarter, worldwide total revenue was $5.29 billion, an increase of 3 percent compared with the second quarter of 2008. Increased sales came from its arsenal of medications, including the cancer drug Erbitux from its purchase of ImClone Systems on Nov. 25.

The second-quarter profit was $1.12 a share on an adjusted basis, beating analysts' forecast of $1.02, Bloomberg reported.

Its revised full-year per-share forecast rose to a range of $4.14 to $4.24.
