Sponsorship of Summer Streets Reflects Commitment of LVMH to Mayor
Bloomberg’s and the DOT’s Efforts to Promote a Greener, Greater NYC
As part of its support of Mayor Bloomberg’s and the Department of
Transportation’s (DOT) efforts to promote a greener, greater New York
City, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the world’s leading luxury goods
company, unveiled the prototypes of the winning bicycling apparel and
accessory designs from the “Bike in Style” Challenge at a press
conference held this morning by the DOT at Astor Place in Manhattan to
officially pre-launch NYC’s Summer Streets 2009, of which LVMH is a main
sponsor.
Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) student Jessica Velasquez created
the designs for the Bike in Style jacket, poncho and bag.
LVMH Inc. in North America, working with the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New
York City, the DOT and FIT, created the Bike in Style Challenge in which
student designers from FIT created stylish, practical and affordable
bike gear. The DKNY division of LVMH-owned Donna Karan International
(DKI) mentored the FIT students and developed the prototypes of the
winning designs.
Debuted last year, Summer Streets closes a 6.9-mile route from the
Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park to cars for people to run, bike, walk
and take part in activities on three Saturday mornings in August,
starting on this Saturday the 8th followed by the 15th
and 22nd.
LVMH Inc. Chairman Renaud Dutreil said, “Summer Streets is a reflection
of the innovation and creativity of the Bloomberg Administration and
DOT. They are really making NYC a greener, greater place to live. LVMH
is delighted to be a main sponsor of this City event and to have shared
the exceptional winning designs of our Bike In Style Challenge to help
promote bicycle commuting.”
He added, “As a citizen company, LVMH is proud to support the efforts of
the City and its agencies; this project illustrates the power of
public-private collaboration. We remain dedicated to supporting
initiatives that enrich people’s lives, improve their health and
reinforce New York’s position as a fashion capital.”
