Monday, August 03, 2009 4:00 PM

First Round of Prestigious South American Tournament Kicks Off On August 4th

Fox Sports en Español announced today the return of the Copa Nissan Sudamericana to its lineup of exclusive soccer action. For the 8th year in a row, Fox Sports en Español will have the exclusive Spanish-language broadcast rights as top clubs from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela face off throughout the four month competition. The tournament kicks off on August 4th at 8:00pm ET/5:00pm PT with a matchup between Colombia’s Deportivo Cali and Universidad de Chile.

Copa Nissan Sudamericana is an international football cup competition that started in 2002, and is second only to the Copa Libertadores in importance for South American club teams. The winner of Copa Nissan Sudamericana faces the Copa Libertadores' champion the following year in the Recopa Sudamericana tournament (the South American equivalent to UEFA's Super Cup). Last year, Sport Club Internacional from Porto Alegre became the first Brazilian winners of the trophy by defeating Argentina’s Estudiantes de La Plata.

The first round of the tournament is scheduled to begin on August 4 and end on September 17. Round of 16 action will take place during the weeks of September 21, 28 and October 5. The quarterfinals are scheduled for the weeks of October 19, 26 and November 2, while the semifinals will take place between November 11-18. The two-legged finals will be on November 25 and December 2.

The following table includes programming details for the first round of the 2009 Copa Nissan Sudamericana. For a complete schedule of Fox Sports en Español's exclusive telecasts, please visit the network's website at www.foxsportsla.msn.com.
