Aug. 4, 2009 (United Press International) -- Nine varieties of wieners made by Canada's Maple Leaf Foods (TSX:MFI) were recalled Tuesday over fears of contamination with listeria monocytogenes.

In a release, the company said the Hygrade, Shopsy's and Maple Leaf brand wieners were made in Hamilton, Ontario, and consumers should not eat any wieners showing that plant's "EST.611" code on the inkjet stamp on the packages.

"The Public Health Agency of Canada has confirmed that there have been no reported illnesses related to these products" across the country, the company said.

Listeria is a common food-borne bacteria that can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea, and death. Maple Leaf said cooking wieners to their steaming point kills bacteria such as listeria.

Consumers who purchased the products were asked to contact the company at 1-800-568-5801 to arrange for replacements or return them to the store where they were purchased for a refund or replacement.

Last year, 22 Canadians died in a listeriosis outbreak and hundreds were sickened from deli meats linked to a Maple Leaf plant in Toronto.
