Daiichi Sankyo has initiated the litigation against Mylan in response to abbreviated new drug applications filed by Mylan seeking to market generic versions of those products before the expiration of Daiichi's patent, which expires in 2016.

According to Daiichi Sankyo, olmesartan medoxomil, an active ingredient in Benicar, Benicar HCT and Azor, is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist that is marketed in over 50 countries as an antihypertensive drug which suppresses vasoconstriction by affecting the rennin-angiotensin system to control blood pressure.
