Aug. 6--If this weekend's 6.75 percent sales tax savings isn't enough to get you shopping, pair it with many of the great deals at most local stores now and save even more.

Summer clearances are nearly everywhere. After all, we've got plenty of warm weather left here. But don't forget to think ahead. Big bargains beckon on fall and winter attire as well as backpacks and other back-to-school essentials. That's what the sales tax holiday is all about. At Sears, all kids' jeans are on sale through Saturday, including Canyon River Blues styles for boys and girls for $17.99, regularly $30-$32. All men's jeans are also on sale. Summer apparel is up to 75 percent off, and you can also get 40 percent off all kids' fashion and character backpacks.

Speaking of backpacks, at J.C. Penney in Independence Mall you can save 20 to 50 percent through Saturday on those from JanSport, Dickies, High Sierra and Protocol Gear. Many come in fun colors and patterns, including polka dots and plaids.

Among the best things about the sales tax holiday weekend at Kohl's, 228 Old Eastwood Road, are the extended hours. Shop from 8 a.m. to midnight Friday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday. There are also special promotions during select hours, including 50 percent to 55 percent off select graphic tees for young men, juniors and boys; 50 percent to 60 percent off entire stock of SO apparel for juniors; 40 percent to 60 percent off entire stock of juniors collections; and 50 percent to 55 percent off entire stock of school uniforms for girls and boys.
