North American Palladium Ltd. (PAL) engages in the exploration and mining of platinum group metals (PGMs) and certain base and precious metals. The Company is one of North America's largest producers of palladium that commenced operations at its 100% owned Lac des Iles mine in 1993.
In the report, the analyst notes:
"Due to low metal prices, PAL placed the mine on care and maintenance status in October 2008. The temporary closure caused the lay-off of approximately 350 PAL employees. But with strong fundamentals expected to drive palladium prices significantly higher in the mid to long term, the Company is currently working on a mine restart plan that will optimize future profitability when metal prices turn upward.
"One of PAL's objectives is to extend the mine life at LDI for up to 12 years at production rates equal to or exceeding historic levels. On June 25, the Company advanced its growth strategy with the discovery of a new underground platinum group minerals (PGM) zone at its Lac des Iles (LDI) mine near Thunder Bay, Ontario. The Company said the new PGM discovery has the potential to extend the mine life and significantly impact the economics of the LDI mine."
