Aug. 14--Carl Icahn's rollercoaster relationship with Williams Cos. Inc. is down and out, for now, as the famous hedge-fund investor apparently has sold all of his stock in the Tulsa natural gas firm.
His Icahn Capital LP listed no holdings in Williams, according to the fund's second-quarter report filed Friday with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Three months ago, Icahn Capital's first-quarter report showed ownership of 360,000 shares in Williams, worth about $4 million as of March 31.
Long known as a so-called corporate raider who takes control of companies and forces changes in management and focus, Icahn began divesting his Williams stock even before this past quarter, records show. His fund owned nearly 17.5 million shares by the end of 2008, according to SEC reports.
The divestiture ends several years of Icahn's holdings in the Tulsa company. The hedge fund's second-quarter SEC report, however, shows it holding most of its previous stocks, including upping his stake in Take Two Interactive Software Inc. to 2 million shares from the previous 1.45 million shares.
His take in Internet search engine Yahoo held steady at 60.45 million shares, the exact number from the first quarter. Icahn bought his way onto the Yahoo board last year.
Some financial analysts wondered whether Icahn was moving toward some kind of Tulsa corporate showdown when he acquired 4.5 million shares of Williams in 2006's second quarter. He owned only 300,000 shares prior to the buy-up, according to reports.
Icahn's stake in Williams fell back to 3.9 million shares
by last year's second quarter. Three months later, however, he nearly doubled that and then bought an additional 10 million shares by the end of the year.
