Bad Power Cords Prompt Hospira Recall

(Source: United Press International)trackingThe U.S. Food and Drug Administration says Hospira Inc. is recalling some of its medication delivery equipment because of potentially defective power cords.

The federal department said in a release Friday that the nationwide recall was prompted by customer complaints that the power plugs of certain Hospira items resulted in fires, charring or sparking when used.

Hospira, based in Lake Forest, Ill., investigated the complaints and determined the prongs of the AC power cords, which were manufactured by Electri-Cord Manufacturing Corp., may crack and fail at or inside the plug.

The product malfunction could result in serious incidents such as fires and electrical shock, as well as product difficulties ranging from setup delays to device failure

Among the items tabbed for recall are a number of LifeCare and Plum products, along with the Oximetrix 3 SO2/CO Cardiac Output Computer, Nutrimix Micro Compounder and the GemStar Docking Station. A full list of the recalled items is available on the FDA Web site.

Starting Sunday, Hospira will begin service work to replace all affected products by replacing the items' power cords regardless of their condition.
