BETHESDA, Md., Aug. 19, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The EagleBank Foundation and The GW Cancer Institute's Center for the Advancement of Cancer Survivorship, Navigation and Policy (caSNP) have partnered to create and support an Annual Symposium on the state of research and clinical care in cancer survivorship. The symposium, which will take place on Thursday, October 15th at The George Washington University's Marvin Center, will examine the needs of more than 12 million cancer survivors in the U.S. who face the challenge of re-entering the world after cancer diagnosis and treatment.
"The number of cancer survivors is rapidly growing, creating a critical need for long-term follow-up care and support," said Dr. Steven Patierno, executive director of The GW Cancer Institute. "This symposium will address the long-term impact of cancer treatment on patients' lives, with nationally and internationally recognized experts convening to explore specific challenges and opportunities, problems and progress, and barriers and breakthroughs -- ultimately providing researchers and clinicians with critical knowledge to improve the quality of life of survivors."

This year's symposium will focus on survivorship research and health disparities and speakers will include Dr. Julia Rowland, director of the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Office of Cancer Survivorship, Dr. Craig Earle, program leader for health services research at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, Dr. Lisa Campbell, associate director of the Center for Health Disparities Research at East Carolina University, and Dr. Kimlin Ashing-Giwa, director of the Center for Community Alliance for Research and Education at City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center.
The symposium will also feature a panel discussion, moderated by Caroline Huffman, director of Survivorship and Patient Navigation Services at the Lance Armstrong Foundation, with representatives from two Livestrong Survivorship Centers of Excellence who have made significant strides in addressing the needs of minority and underserved cancer survivors.
