Company recognized for reducing landfill by more than 45 tons in 2008
WICHITA, Kan., Aug. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- LSI Corporation (NYSE: LSI) today announced it has received the 2009 Kansas Pollution Prevention Award in the Recycling category from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). In 2008, the company's electronic scrap recycling program reduced the amount of solid waste sent to Kansas landfills by more than 45 tons.
Kansas Pollution Prevention Awards are given annually to those individuals, communities or community groups, businesses, and industries that have made a significant impact on the environment by preventing pollution. LSI will be presented with the recycling award on August 19 at 12:15 p.m. during a luncheon at the 2009 Kansas Environmental Conference being held at the Hyatt Regency in Wichita.
"The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is pleased to bestow LSI with a 2009 Pollution Prevention Award," said Roderick L. Bremby, Secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. "Improving the environment is everyone's responsibility, and LSI has demonstrated a major commitment to the task."
LSI is being honored for its environmental, health and safety (EH&S) program, which covers the recycling of electronic scrap generated at its Wichita facility and in the homes of its employees, including computers, circuit boards, CRTs, hard drives and audio/video equipment. The award also recognizes LSI's efforts to repurpose as much electronic material as possible within its facility, which helps reduce the amount of waste generated.
"LSI has put best-practice policies and procedures in place to ensure that electronic waste is accounted for, reused whenever possible and disposed of properly," said Ryan Livengood, manager of environmental health and safety at LSI in Wichita. "We are honored to be recognized for our efforts by the State of Kansas."
As part of the LSI Safety & Environmental Management System (SEMS), the company works only with vendors and recyclers that are on an approved list of environmental stewards. The SEMS process recently helped the LSI facility in Wichita obtain ISO-14001 certification. ISO 14001 is a standard that establishes environmental management system requirements for organizations.
