Aug. 21--The rap group 336 Boyz, from High Point, will be featured Thursday night on the BET series 106 & Park. They will be competing for a $5,000 prize. This weekend, they are throwing a party to raise money for their trip to New York, where the show is produced.
The group will perform live on the show, which will air from 6 to 8 p.m. The group was formed in 2006 when its five members were in high school. Two members, DJ Luke and Ceez, are starting their freshman years at Winston-Salem State University. Other members are attending Guilford Technical Community College and barber school.
Their "Road to BET/Back to School" party will be held from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. at Centennial Station, 121 S. Centennial St. in High Point. The party is for teenagers, and admission is $10.
The price of admission goes toward raising the $1,200 needed for the trip.
The group will compete against other rappers on the show, and the public will then be able to vote for their favorite at bet.com/OnTV/BETShows/106andpark.
Many of their performances can be seen online at YouTube, and you can hear some of their songs at myspace

Could the future of television be in your pocket?
I recently tested the new Mobile TV feature on an AT&T cell phone and found it quite addictive, especially for people who like to watch the news or comedy, where the small size of a cell-phone screen works well.
Among the channels offering live programming on Mobile TV are CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, CNBC and ESPN. There are also such entertainment channels available as Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon and Sony Crackle (a movie channel exclusive to AT&T).
Broadcast networks CBS, NBC and Fox also provide programming, though some of it is delayed.
Reception was good, though in my house it faded in and out occasionally. But there's a real TV in my house, so that's a moot point. The service was particularly handy when walking dogs after work and listening to the nightly news.
The service is available on four models of AT&T phones for $15 a month. AT&T is offering Mobile TV only in certain areas at this time; in North Carolina, it's available in the Triad, the Triangle and Charlotte. Verizon also offers Mobile TV service in some markets, but none are in North Carolina.

Another alumnus of the UNC School of the Arts will soon be on television. This fall, Matt Lauria, who graduated from the school of drama in 2007, will have a recurring role on NBC's Friday Night Lights, about a high-school football team. Lauria will play a character described by Entertainment Weekly as "a charming yet cocky junior who reluctantly finds himself playing for Coach Taylor's East Dillon squad."
Last season, Lauria had a recurring role on another NBC series, Lipstick Jungle.
Friday Night Lights will return for its fourth season in October. A fifth season has already been ordered.
A third volume of the ABC Family comedy-drama Greek, about college life, is among this week's TV-to-DVD releases.
Carter Covington, a former Winston-Salem resident, was a writer and producer on the show before getting his own series on ABC Family, 10 Things I Hate About You.
Also new on DVD this week: the first season of FX's biker drama Sons of Anarchy; the second seasons of the hit teen drama Gossip Girl, and the quirky (and now-canceled) legal comedy-drama Eli Stone; the third seasons of the detective show Simon & Simon, and the Showtime drama Dexter; the fourth and final season of Everybody Hates Chris; and the 12th season of The Simpsons.
