Aug. 27--SALEM, N.H. -- Crews are working to lay underground electrical and utility lines in preparation for constructing a new Lowe's store on Route 28.
The old buildings at the site have been torn down, and crews have been working in recent weeks to blast away ledge, and lay down electrical and utility lines, according to Jeff Curley of W/S Development. That work will continue into the fall, Curley said.
"Earth moving and utility installation is sort of the flavor of the moment," he said.
Located at the Stateline Plaza on Route 28, the project's centerpiece will be a 155,000-square-foot Lowe's. With an estimated price tag of more than $8 million, the project was approved by the Planning Board last October, contingent upon the approval of outside engineering consultants and state agencies.
The redevelopment also will bring a Sovereign Bank to the plaza and a freestanding Staples to replace the old store, which was torn down earlier this summer. Construction of those building will begin after the Lowe's building is completed, Curley said.
Construction on the new Lowe's is expected to begin in April, Curley said.
Work will include the installation of a new traffic light, as well as widening the road in some areas. The roadwork, as well as some of the early construction of the new home improvement superstore, is expected to be completed by fall 2010.
The Lowe's is expected to be opened by the end of 2010.
"That will be the first building to go up," Curley said.
Namco, a pool company, has remained open during the construction, That building will get a new facade as part of the redevelopment project.
