ITC Great Plains, a subsidiary of ITC Holdings, has purchased two power transmission substations as part of its ongoing commitment to help Kansas's address long-term energy challenges by pursuing a growth strategy that will result in ownership and operation of a transmission system across the region.
ITC Great Plains has acquired and will now operate the 138kV Flat Ridge substation located in Barber County, Kansas, near the Flat Ridge wind farm development and the 230kV Elm Creek substation located in Cloud County, Kansas, near the Meridian Way wind farm development. Both substations were purchased from the Mid-Kansas Electric Company.
ITC Great Plains has said that the acquisition has received an approval from the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) and allows ITC Great Plains to participate in the Southwest Power Pool as a transmission owner.
Carl Huslig, president of ITC Great Plains, said: "This marks a significant milestone in our efforts not only to develop and operate a 21st century electric grid, but also to help address ongoing energy issues in Kansas.
"Mid-Kansas has been supportive throughout this process, and we thank the KCC for acting on this matter. ITC Great Plains is well positioned to continue developing transmission solutions for the state that facilitate renewable energy and address current system capacity constraints."
