Scholastic to Help Kids and Families Donate 3 Million Books Through Classroom, School and Community Giving Programs
NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 08/27/09 -- Scholastic (NASDAQ: SCHL), the global
children's publishing, education and media company, today announced the
launch of a new Web site "Give
Back to School with Scholastic" to help kids learn about the importance
of giving back and service, and to help them provide more than 3 million
books to kids in need. The site (www.scholastic.com/giveback) provides
teachers and parents with tips and resources for use in the classroom and
at home and information on how to create a culture of giving and service
with today's kids.
"At a time when so many families, schools and communities are struggling
financially, it's even more important than ever for children to learn about
helping others," said Francie Alexander, Chief Academic Officer at
Scholastic. "Scholastic created 'ClassroomsCare,' 'One for
Books' and 'Clifford
BE BIG!' to help families and kids give back through their love of
reading and books around the world. We hope this site will help create a
culture of giving and service for all children."
Scholastic is also inviting families, children and teachers to share
examples of how they are giving back in their communities.
The Scholastic programs below offer several ways for families, kids and
schools to help those in need and spread their love of reading around the
world:
Scholastic Book Clubs
-- "ClassroomsCare" is a philanthropy-based literacy campaign designed to
teach children about the joys and importance of reading and giving. Classes
all across the country are each challenged to read 100 books and, in turn,
Scholastic Book Clubs will deliver 1 million new books to children in need
nationwide. This year, football greats Eli and Peyton Manning are
Scholastic's "ClassroomsCare" Ambassadors of Reading.
-- Parents are giving back to their child's classroom with every
Scholastic Book Clubs order as teachers accrue bonus points that provide
classroom supplies, resources and, of course, books.
Scholastic Book Fairs
-- The "One for Books" outreach program provides a quick and easy way for
parents and businesses to make donations, a dollar at a time or some loose
change, to schools in their neighborhood.
