Aug. 28--The Port of Houston Authority said today that it has chosen energy executive Alec G. Dreyer as its next executive director. Port commissioners are expected to formally approve the recommendation at their Sept. 29 board meeting.

Dreyer was formerly CEO of Horizon Wind Energy, a wind energy developer, and executive vice president in charge of Dynegy's generation division.

He now serves as board chairman of Comverge. a maker of power-monitoring equipment, including "smart grid" technologies designed to improve efficiency in electrical distribution. He also is on the board of Dublin-based EcoSecurities Group PLC, which develops emissions-reduction programs and trades carbon-offset credits.

He will succeed Tom Kornegay, who retired Feb. 1 after 17 years as executive director.

Port Commission Chairman James Edmonds said commissioners believe Dreyer's "business acumen will further advance PHA's mandate, which is to create economic development and jobs through maritime commerce."

"I am grateful for the opportunity to work with the port commissioners, port authority staff, and our stakeholders to serve our community," Dreyer said. "I appreciate the commission's confidence in my ability to contribute to the ongoing success of this dynamic international organization."

Dreyer, a certified public accountant, has also served in executive positions at Illinova Corp., Illinois Power, Illinova Generating and Price Waterhouse. A graduate of the University of Illinois, Dreyer earned his master of business administration degree from Washington University in St. Louis.

"We understand he's got a strong financial and business background and we wish him luck in his new role at the Port of Houston," said Niels Aaulund, vice president with the West Gulf Maritime Association, an industry trade organization.
