CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Cato Corporation (NYSE: CTR) today reported sales for the four weeks ended August 29, 2009 of $59.0 million, a 6% increase over sales of $55.6 million for the four week period ended August 30, 2008. Same-store sales increased 5% for the month.
Sales for the thirty weeks ended August 29, 2009 were $522.4 million, an increase of 2% over sales of $512.3 million for the thirty weeks ended August 30, 2008. The Company's year-to-date same-store sales increased 1%.
"August same-store sales benefited from the shift of many states' tax-free weekends from July and a weak comparable period last year," commented John Cato, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer.
During the month of August, the Company opened five new stores, relocated one store and closed one It's Fashion store to convert it to an It's Fashion Metro store. New stores opened in Thomasville, AL, New Orleans, LA, Oakville, MO, DeSoto, TX, and Virginia Beach, VA. As of August 29, 2009, the Company operated 1,289 stores in 31 states, compared to 1,292 stores in 30 states as of August 30, 2008.
