Sep. 6--BROOKSVILLE -- County commissioners Tuesday will consider Tuesday whether to decrease the number of unpaid furlough days for government employees next year from 12 to either 10 or eight, depending on work hours.
Originally, the Human Resources Department had recommended 12 furlough days for all employees, with a projected savings to the general fund of $533,365.
However, after obtaining a legal opinion regarding the Fair Labor Standard Act, HR Director Cheryl Marsden is recommending 10 days of unpaid time off for eight-hour employees and eight furlough days for 10-hour employees.
That reduces the savings to the general fund to $118,345. To make up the $415,019 difference, Marsden will recommend several other options, including layoffs, reduced hours and workforce reductions.
Also on Tuesday's agenda:
--Commissioners will consider a request from builder Jeff West to suspend impact fees for an unspecified time period to spur new residential construction.
In a resolution sent to the board, West said a lack of incentives for new building "makes it impossible to compete with existing residential sales."
--The Department of Public Works will ask commissioners to accept a $264,400 bid from Inglis-based DAB Constructors to resurface the section of road east of Spring Hill Drive and Deltona Boulevard intersection to about 1,300 feet west of the Spring Hill Drive-Pinehurst Drive intersection.
The resurfacing is labeled a stimulus project and is funded by the federal government.
The commission meeting begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Hernando County Government Center, 20 North Main St. in downtown Brooksville.
