Sep. 9, 2009 (United Press International) -- Some Texas students watched U.S. President Barack Obama's back-to-school speech live in the classroom while others saw it later on tape, observers say.
While some students watched it as it happened in classrooms Tuesday across North Texas, others watched recorded versions later in the day, and 100 parents and students in Arlington saw it at Cornerstone Baptist Church, the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram reported.
The newspaper said some North Texas school districts, such as Aledo, Grapevine-Colleyville and Eagle Mountain-Saginaw, also declined to show Obama's speech. Some parents and conservative political pundits objected to the address to schoolchildren on the grounds that the president would use the time to "push his agenda onto America's youth."
But students at Trimble (NASDAQ:TRMB) Tech told the newspaper the controversy seemed blown out of proportion.
"This has nothing to do with healthcare reform -- that can come later," said sophomore Leah Johnson. "It was about us right now because we're a priority."
