To honor the federally recognized September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, a team of Union Bank employees will volunteer at Firebaugh City Park to assist drought relief emergency food distribution efforts in west Fresno County. The bank is working in conjunction with HandsOn Central California to help the Community Food Bank's efforts to distribute three million pounds of food each month through October in emergency aid to Huron, Firebaugh, Mendota, Selma and San Joaquin.
Volunteers will assist in Firebaugh on Friday, September 11, distributing canned and dry goods to clients and transporting food to recipients' cars. Additional Union Bank volunteers will also be working in Selma on September 10, September 24, and October 8 to assist with the food distribution center located in the Valley Life Community Church parking lot.
"At Union Bank, corporate citizenship through employee volunteerism is woven into the fabric of our bank, and we are committed to supporting the communities we serve," explains Elaine Genevro, senior vice president and market president for Union Bank's Central California division. "We're very proud of our employees who get involved in their community and especially applaud the individuals who are giving their time to help with the drought relief efforts in Fresno."
According to Dana Wilkie, chief executive of Fresno's Community Food Bank, the need is greater than it has ever been in the Central Valley. "We are currently serving about 30,000 people each month through our efforts," she said.
"This is a huge task, and we need the volunteer support of our local employers," said Cathy Caples, executive director for HandsOn Central California. "This is a critical need and without the help of Union Bank and other corporate citizens, we may have to turn families away."
Union Bank recently unveiled a significant enhancement to its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) division that places greater emphasis on promoting and honoring volunteerism among employees and within all of the bank's business units. The new program provides employees up to eight hours of paid time off to assist various approved programs and organizations. The program also encourages non-profits and community organizations to look to the banking and financial expertise of bank employees to assist with financial literacy.
