NEW YORK, Sept. 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The committee for the Prix Galien USA, the equivalent to the Nobel Prize for pharmaceutical research and development, will host an unprecedented discussion of how innovative science and clinical research can improve health care across the U.S. and around the world.
The event will feature Walter Gilbert, M.D., founder of Biogen and a member of the Prix Galien USA committee; Leonard Bell, M.D., president and CEO of Alexion Pharmaceuticals; a patient living with the ultra-rare disease paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH); as well as the recipients of the 2009 Prix Galien Pro Bono Humanum Award, Barry Bloom, Ph.D., and Jeffrey Sachs, Ph.D. The event will be held at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City on September 30 at 2:30 p.m., preceding the 2009 Prix Galien USA gala awards ceremony.
Moderated by Prix Galien USA Committee Chair Gerald Weissmann, M.D., the discussion will examine the full spectrum of health and disease -- from the world's major pandemics to ultra-rare diseases -- and the role innovation plays in improving health care. Panelists will analyze the applications of basic biomedical science and economics that have been used to address the world's biggest problems and have the potential to improve human health and wellness.
