SFMOMA Director Neal Benezra said the 1,100-piece art collection, which includes works by famed artists like Andy Warhol and Chuck Close, will make the San Francisco museum a key tourist destination, the Bay Area News Group reported Saturday.

"For the art of this period, the last 50 years, this partnership will unquestionably raise our museum to the must-see status of the really great museums of the world," Benezra said Friday.

Don Fisher, who founded Gap Inc. with his wife in 1969, said in a written statement he and his wife chose the modern art museum to help "give back" to San Francisco.

"San Francisco is where we raised our family and opened our first Gap store, and we want to give back to the city we love by sharing the art that means so much to us," Fisher said.

The Bay Area News Group said an expansion project at the modern art museum that should triple the site's gallery space is currently being planned.
