Star Scientific Inc. (STSI), together with its subsidiaries, engages in the development, implementation and licensing of tobacco curing technology that prevents the formation of carcinogenic toxins present in tobacco and tobacco smoke, primarily the tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs). It also manufactures, sells, markets and develops low-TSNA dissolvable smokeless tobacco products, such as ARIVA, a compressed powdered tobacco cigalett, and STONEWALL Hard Snuff, a non-fermented spit-free hard tobacco product for moist snuff users designed to provide adult tobacco users with an alternative to cigarettes.

In the report, the analyst notes:

"STSI plans to seek regulatory approval in early 2010 for tobacco products that promise reduced levels of carcinogens. The Company plans to submit the products for approval to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration as 'modified risk' tobacco products under Section 911 of the new Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. This new curing process was the subject of a patent application filed in December 2008. Its use has resulted in tobacco leaves with significantly lower levels of tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) than previously achieved using the StarCured(R) curing process; the International Agency for Research on Cancer previously has reported on the low levels of nitrosamines in STSI's products.

"Smokeless tobacco primarily attracts former smokers. According to consumer research in the U.S., 50% of daily snus users are ex-smokers. Industry analysts have reported that the smokeless tobacco market has been expanding at a rate of approximately 2%-3% per year since 2003, while the cigarette market has been contracting over the same period."
