Sep. 30, 2009 (United Press International) -- Relatives of a California woman who died trying to win a radio station's water-drinking contest sued for companionship loss, court documents showed.
The mother of Jennifer Strange, the 28-year-old mother of three who died Jan. 12, 2007, testified Monday that because of Strange's death, her oldest grandchild is no longer living with his half-brother and half-sister, and has suffered in his academic performance, Te Sacramento Bee reported.
The contest was sponsored by KDND 107.9 FM, owned by Entercom Communications Corp. (NYSE:ETM) of Philadelphia. It was entitled "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" and offered a Wii video game to the person who could drink the most water without urinating, the newspaper reported.
Strange's family contends that callers to the station warned drinking too much water without urinating had proven lethal. Entercom has attempted to distance the company from KDND's "Morning Rave" personnel, saying the contest was against the company's policies, and maintains the death was unforeseeable, the newspaper said.
If a jury says the company is liable for the wrongful death of Strange, testimony indicating the extent of the loss of the Strange's comfort, love and companionship will be instrumental in deciding damages, the newspaper said.
