New Speakers Confirmed for 2009 California Healthcare Policy Forum

Oct. 1, 2009 (Business Wire) -- CHI-California Healthcare Institute today announced its speaker lineup for the 2009 California Healthcare Policy Forum to be held Nov. 5, at the InterContinental Mark Hopkins San Francisco Hotel, from 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. This annual statewide conference brings opinion leaders from the science, business and public sectors together to discuss critical opportunities and issues facing the biomedical community. The forum allows for the confluence of the private and academic research sectors with policy makers to ensure that innovation will continue to benefit Americans in the future.

Confirmed speakers include futurist and author Ian Morrison, Ph.D.; Alan M. Garber, A.B., A.M., Ph.D., M.D., director, center for health policy and center for primary care and outcomes research, Stanford University; Michael Goldberg, partner, Mohr Davidow Ventures; Assemblymember Nathan Fletcher; Hans Bishop, president, specialty medicine, Bayer HealthCare LLC; Robert B. Hance, president, Abbott Vascular; Carl W. Hull, president and chief executive officer, Gen-Probe Incorporated; Michael A. Mussallem, chairman and CEO, Edwards Lifesciences; John C. Martin, Ph.D., chairman of the board and CEO, Gilead Sciences; and Mark D. Smith, M.D., M.B.A., president and CEO, California HealthCare Foundation.

Ian Morrison is an internationally known author, consultant and futurist specializing in long-term forecasting and planning with particular emphasis on healthcare and the changing business environment. Morrison is a founding partner of Strategic Health Perspectives, a forecasting service for clients in the healthcare industry, and a joint venture partner of Harris Interactive and the Harvard School of Public Health’s Department of Health Policy and Management. Morrison holds an interdisciplinary doctorate in urban studies from the University of British Columbia; a master’s degree in geography from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and a graduate degree in urban planning from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England.

Alan M. Garber, A.B., A.M., Ph.D., M.D., is the Henry J. Kaiser Jr. Professor at Stanford University, where he is also a professor of medicine, and professor of economics, health research and policy in the Graduate School of Business. He is also a Senior Fellow in the Freeman-Spogli Institute for International Studies and in the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research.
