Oct. 4--CROWN POINT -- A program geared to save the city's seniors some
money on their city utility bills will begin Monday.
"We'll measure the success by the number of people who will want to take
advantage of it," said Mayor David Uran.
In July, the City Council passed an ordinance that gives a discount for
senior citizens for the bill provided that each applicant be at least 62 years
old by the close of the application period, live within the city limits and
their name is on the bill.
The amount discounted will vary and will be determined by the number of
applications. Discounts are expected to be $10 or less, according to the
ordinance.
Uran said it is unknown how much each senior would save, because it
depends on how many people register. For example, if $100,000 has been set
aside for the discount and there are 1,500 applicants, each would receive a
discount of about $5.50 per month.
The application period is from Monday to Dec. 14, for a discount next
year. The process will be annually reviewed by the council's Utilities
Committee.
Registration will be from 9 a.m. to noon each Monday from 9 a.m. to noon
and noon to 4 p.m. each Wednesday at the Crown Point Civic Center, 101 S. East
St. A picture ID will be needed at registration.
