Oct. 8, 2009 (United Press International) -- Rhode Island-based CVS (NYSE:CVS) /Pharmacy said its stores will no longer stock the Chia heads depicting President Barack Obama, months after a similar move by Walgreens. (NYSE:WAG)
A CVS spokesman declined to give a specific reason for pulling the products, which Walgreens stopped selling in April after complaints of racial insensitivity in the product's design, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.
Chia owner Joe Pedott said he does not understand the decision to remove the items from CVS despite their popularity, which he said has grown since the controversy that led Walgreens to stop stocking the Chia Obamas.
"I can't think of any reason a store like CVS would want to stop selling it," he said.
Pedott said he has not received any complaints from African-Americans about the Chias and he proudly displays a photo of himself presenting one of the items to the president in May.
"If the consumer wants it, what's the problem?" he said. "You're giving him an Afro. If you don't want it, cut it off. He had an Afro when he was younger."
