Oct. 10--McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurants, a Portland-based chain with 93 restaurants across the United States and Canada, will in January move its headquarters from downtown Portland to a new "green" building in the city's Pearl District with eco roofs, recycled steel and lots of natural lighting.
The publicly-traded company, founded in Portland 37 years ago, will move its headquarters staff of 110 people from leased offices on SW Washington Street into the entire seventh floor of the nine-story Machine Works Building at 1414 NW Northrup St. It has signed a seven-year lease for 19,250 square-feet in the 112,000 square-foot building, which was completed in January.
Bill Freeman, chief executive of McCormick & Schmick's, said the company looked for more than a year for office space that will allow it to consolidate it's headquarters, which now occupy two floors in one building and space in a building across the street. Freeman said the company never considered leaving central Portland.
The Machine Works Building, which has applied for a Gold LEED certification, reuses 72 tons of steel from the former Jackson Machine Works factory on its site, has two eco roofs covered with plants to capture rainwater and incorporates energy-saving glass, said Eric Haskins, a broker with leasing agent Grubb & Ellis. "We're excited about the building," Freeman said. "It fits with culture of our organization."
