Oct. 10--The Athens Police Department is investigating an incident in which a pickup was driven through the front of a gas station/convenience. The incident occurred on Friday at about 2:25 a.m.

The Chevron station at the intersection of East Corsicana Street and Murchison Street sustained substantial damage from the crash, Detective Sgt. Don Yarbrough said. APD has also identified a "person of interest" in the case.

"I think they got scared away when it made too much noise, and people started coming out of their houses," Yarbrough said. "It probably sounded like a car wreck. We've got good descriptions, and the vehicle we think was used."

There was definitely wreckage. Store supervisor Ash Hafreez said he was notified by police of the break-in. When he arrived at the store, he found broken glass, a pile of dislodged bricks, damaged counters and piles of merchandise on the floor. By Friday afternoon, much of the mess had been cleaned up, and repairs to the front of the store were underway.

APD dispatch received a call from a citizen, alerting them to the break-in attempt. Officers Christopher Saylors, Jason McIntire, Shane Hagood, Jason McIntire and Investigator William Carlow responded to the call.

A short time later, officers located the pickup at the Best Value Inn.

"We found it a block or two from there," Yarbrough said.
