BEIJING, Oct. 14, 2009 (Xinhua News Agency) -- Sina (SINA.NASDAQ), after being absent from China's online gaming industry for several years, has returned as a co-operator of its local peer Kingsoft Co., Ltd.'s 2D web game, according to media reports citing statement of the two sides.
Sina, boasting edging media resources and numerous customers its partner lacks, is likely to accrue experience in online game R&D and operation from the cooperation, said insiders.Earlier in 2003, Sina announced a high-profile entrance into China's online gaming market but exited three years later with no track of record.
Meanwhile, its rival, Sohu (NASDAQ:SOHU) (SOHU.NASDAQ) and Netease (NASDAQ:NTES) (NTES.NASDAQ) pocketed 128 million US dollars and 127.1 million US dollars in games revenue in quarter two, as compared to Sina's 90.3 million dollar income from game operation.
Besides, earnings from advertisement also plummeted in quarter two, which forced the Chinese internet portal for innovation, said the reports.
Cao Guowei, new CEO of the company, announced when succeeding the position at end-September that Sina would not rule out chances to re-enter local online game market.
But as the industry regulator imposed tighter market access shortly before, the partnership with Kingsoft would turn out to be a better short-cut.
