Oct. 15--The day after the arrival of the worst October storm to hit the Bay Area in nearly 50 years, about 200 San Mateo County residents were still without power and authorities were tallying up the damage.
Winds that gusted up to 60 mph knocked over at least 47 trees and 31 sets of power lines, said Bill O'Callahan, supervisor of the San Mateo County Office of Emergency Services. He said there were at least 14 major accidents, most of them on freeways.
"People really need to pay attention and slow down when the weather is like it was," he said.
The San Mateo County Coroner's Office identified a 74-year-old Half Moon Bay resident who died in a head-on collision Tuesday morning on Highway 1 at Devil's Slide as Marilyn Bosshart. Police said the driver who ran his Nissan into her Geo was driving too fast on roads that had been made slick by heavy rainfall.
San Francisco International Airport saw 2.5 inches of rain and at least 7.5 inches fell in Portola Valley by the time the worst of the storm had passed at 5 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
The volume of water wouldn't have been a problem, but the wind knocked leaves and branches out of trees that wound up clogging drains, said Millbrae Public Works Director Ron Popp.
The trees brought down by the high winds were the most common cause of power outages, said PG&E spokeswoman Katie Romans. She said the 200 customers in San Mateo County still without power
are in areas where power lines are close to trees.
Romans said 40 customers in Pescadero as well as scattered homes in Half Moon Bay and Moss Beach remained in the dark late Wednesday afternoon. She said crews were trying to get the power back on by Wednesday night or today.
