SAO PAULO, 10/16/09 - Brazilian water and sewerage company
Companhia de Saneamento do Estado de Sao Paulo (Sabesp) will receive
a US$600 million loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB)
to expand the collection and treatment of the sewerage discharged
into the Tiete River, in Sao Paulo. IDB is also helping the Sao
Paulo State Government's plan to extend sewerage operations to the
city's entire population by 2023. The project is estimated at R$4.7
billion, or US$2.6 billion.
The loan will enable 200,000 households to be connected to the
city's sewerage system, thus benefiting 800,000 people, and will
finance the modernization and construction of several sewerage
treatment plants.
When the works are concluded, 84% of the city's sewerage will be
treated against current 66%.
