Atheros Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATHR), a global leader in
innovative technologies for wireless and wired communications, today
announced that it has shipped well over 10 million of its Align chips
based on the single-stream 802.11n standard. The company began
shipping the popular Align AR9285 single-chip PCI Express (PCIe)
solution in the fourth quarter of 2008, targeting value-class
netbook, notebook and desktop PCs, wireless routers, and consumer
electronics (CE) devices. The rapid adoption of Atheros Align
technology has made it the company's fastest ramping chip in its
11-year history.
Align technology is being used by seven of the top ten PC
manufacturers and five of the top five home networking equipment
vendors. Recently, the AR9285 became the industry's first 1-stream
client solution to achieve Wi-Fi Alliance(R) Wi-Fi CERTIFIED(TM) 11n
program certification. With Align's compliance to this industry
standard, users are assured that Align-based devices will
interoperate with all other 11n-certified products, as well as with
legacy WLAN devices.
"Align has proven to be an ideal upgrade path from legacy WLAN for
our customers looking to provide 11n-class performance in a wide array
of products, including netbooks, entry-level gateways and access
point/routers," said Ben Naskar, vice president and general manager
of Atheros' Networking Business Unit. "We are very pleased that Align
provides extraordinary value to the end user and has thus experienced
such rapid market adoption."
Atheros Align solutions support up to 150 Mbps PHY rates for robust
data networking, while also enabling enhanced reliability and
power-efficient operation over legacy WLAN. Additionally, Align-based
products are forward compatible to higher-performance, multi-stream
11n devices and offer backward compatibility to legacy WLAN.
