More than one-fourth of organizations surveyed by Osterman Research do
not have an email retention policy, reports TMCnet.com, yet U.S.
businesses are mandated by law to archive electronic communication. For
instance, the Federal Regulations on Civil Procedures (FRCP) require
businesses involved in federal court cases to identify, preserve and
collect electronically stored information. Sarbanes-Oxley and HIPAA
regulations also extend to electronic records. But costs to implement
effective email archiving systems can be high, and many small and medium
sized businesses don't have dedicated legal departments, thus the task
falls to already busy IT departments. Businesses are expected to spend
$860 million on archiving software and services through 2009 according
to research firm IDC.
