DHAKA, Oct. 25, 2009 (Xinhua News Agency) -- Bangladesh's inflation surged in August, the second month of the current fiscal year ending June 2010, compared to the previous month, official statistics showed Sunday.
According to Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BAS), the South Asian country's inflation jumped to 4.69 percent in August from 3. 46 percent in July.
The BAS data showed the food inflation surged to 4.93 percent in August from 3.34 percent in July. However, in case of non-food items the rate of inflation also surged to 4.54 percent in August from 3.74 percent in June.
It showed inflation rate in urban areas reached 5.81 percent in August, which was 4.09 percent in July. In rural areas, the inflation rate was 4.25 percent in July, up from 3.21 percent in July.
In August last year, however, the country's point-to-point inflation was recorded at 10.11 percent.
Bangladesh's annual average rate of inflation dipped to 6.6 percent in the last fiscal year (July 2008-June 2009) as prices of essentials slid in the country following robust domestic food production and the collapse of global commodity price bubble.
