Nov. 1--As city voters head to the polls Tuesday to determine who will serve as their elected officials, those currently in office will be about city business.
The Yuma City Council will hold its roundtable at 3 p.m. Tuesday, but will move the meeting to the council chambers at Yuma City Hall, One City Plaza, because its usual meeting room will be serving as a polling place.
During the roundtable, Hank Baer, city utilities director, will provide an update on the proposed intergovernmental agreement with a Yuma County improvement district formed to bring sanitary sewer services to the Avenues B and C Colonia off 8th Street in northwest Yuma.
The project would connect the unincorporated area to city sewer services. It was initiated by residents of the colonia, which suffers from a chronic sewage problems with failing septic tanks that present a health hazard to residents and potential contamination of the Colorado River a half-mile away.
Total cost of the project is estimated at more than $23 million. With millions of dollars in federal stimulus money and other grants earmarked for the project, about $4 million of the cost remains to be borne by the area's residents.
In other business, the council will hear a briefing on a proposal to modify the conditional use permitting process by allowing administrative approval.
There will be no work session Tuesday because of the election.
The council will be asked to approve a number of annexations during its regular meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the council chambers. They include property at Avenue 9-1/2E and 32nd Street, Gila Ridge Road and Avenue 3E, County 17-1/2 Street and Avenue 1-1/2E, and an area on the east mesa south of 32nd Street at Avenue 9E.
Also on the agenda is a measure to approve the exchange and acquisition of property for future improvements to the intersection at 16th Street and Avenue A. The acquisition involves property fronting the Inca Lanes bowling center, including the landscaping and front row of parking.
The bowling center will be permitted to continue to use the parking for now, said city spokesman Greg Hyland.
In addition, the city will exchange a parcel it acquired from the former Chevron convenience store for an equal amount owned by Inca Lanes.
