Monday, November 02, 2009 7:20 PM

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, Nov. 2, 2009 (Marketwire) -- First responders will participate in an exercise to practice their response to an emergency situation. The exercise is a component of Exercise Gold - the third and final element of the 2010 Olympic Integrated Exercise Program.

The 2010 Olympic Integrated Exercise Program is designed to ensure that municipal, regional, provincial and federal organizations are prepared to respond in a coordinated manner to any emergency that may occur during the 2010 Winter Games.

The exercise will be staged at the VIA Rail Canada maintenance yard (behind the Pacific Central Station, 1150 Station Street), near the corner of National Avenue and Thornton Street, and will involve a range of participants including first responders and mock casualties. Media are invited to attend.

As this will be a "live" exercise, media need to be aware of the following:

- For safety reasons, site access will be restricted. Media should carry proper identification at all times. There will be a safe area on the site from which media will be able to observe the exercise.

- The media opportunity will begin at 9:30 am and conclude at 10:00 am.

- A brief question and answer period will take place during the exercise.

While businesses in the area have been notified, media may receive some public calls concerning the activity in the area. Please advise your newsroom switchboards or other appropriate staff that this exercise will be underway.
