Nov. 2, 2009 (United Press International) -- Mike Duvall, who quit the California Assembly after he was heard on a microphone boasting of an affair with a lobbyist, faces no federal charges, the FBI said.
Duvall resigned after a video clip was televised in which he described a sexual relationship with a woman whose name was not reported at the time but who was widely understood to be Sempra Energy (NYSE:SRE) lobbyist Heidi Barsuglia, the Los Angeles Times reported. Following the announcement Monday that Duvall faces no federal charges, Sempra said it has reinstated Barsuglia to active status on its workforce.
"This experience has been a professional and personal nightmare," Barsuglia said in a statement. "I did nothing whatsoever illegal or unethical with former Assemblyman Duvall or anyone else."
Duvall, a Republican, was serving as vice chairman of the Assembly Committee on Utilities and Commerce when he was taped telling a colleague about various sexual adventures. He resigned Sept. 9 after the video clip was televised and posted online -- insisting he did not resign because of an extramarital affair but because he had engaged in "inappropriate storytelling."
Malcolm Segal, an attorney for Barsuglia, would not rule out the possibility of legal action against Duvall.
"Her reputation, her job and her exemplary career have all been placed in jeopardy by Duvall's disgusting remarks," Segal said.
