TIANJIN, Nov. 3, 2009 (Xinhua News Agency) -- China had 830 GW of installed power capacity by the end of September this year, up from 357 GW in 2002, said Xie Zhenhua, vice chairman of the China Electricity Council.
Speaking at an industry forum here Tuesday, Xie said China added 49.12 GW of power capacity in January to September, including 12.1 GW of hydraulic power and 4.07 GW of wind power.
Meanwhile, China had phased out 54.07 GW of small-sized coal-burning power stations by the end of June 2009, one and a half years ahead of the government?s deadline to shut down 50 GW of small coal-burning capacity.
The installed capacity of renewable energy has grown in recent years. By the end of 2008 China had 189.84 GW of installed capacity from clean and new energy, including 172.6 GW of hydraulic power, 9.08 GW of nuclear power, 140 MW of solar power (OTCBB:SOPW) and over 3 GW of biomass power.
Xie also urged the government to strengthen macro planning, grid construction and innovation in addition to developing standard systems for renewable energy.
