Nov. 4--Bill Cosby: The Mark Twain Prize 2009 8 p.m., PBS (check
listings) Bill Cosby receives the 12th Annual Mark Twain Prize for American
Humor. We still quote to each other from Cosby's stand-up routine of decades
ago, the bit about going to the dentist ("Sm-boke! Sm-boke!"), being in the
delivery room with his wife, and feeding his kids cake for breakfast ("We love
Dad! Dad is great! Daddy gives us chocolate cake!") The man's got staying
power.
The Middle 8:30 p.m., ABC I had enjoyed the premiere of this Patricia
Heaton sitcom, but decided not to watch because I felt that in too many ways,
this barely-hanging-on middle class family's situations too closely mirrored
my own. In other words, uncomfortable. But I watched the most recent episode,
in which the youngest, oddest child, Brick, is given special attention, and it
really is a good show. It is very funny, and it has a huge heart. I am no
Heaton fan, and I think part of the appeal is that in this, she really is part
of the ensemble. So, I'm jumping back on.
Modern Family 9 p.m., ABC So I got my friend Jennifer to finally check it
out last week, after telling her repeatedly how LOL this show is, and of
course she watches and it's the one in which they dial down the hilarity and
dial up the humanity. Which was a wise move in the growth of the show, because
weren't we all wondering why Claire was still married to Phil? And weren't we
are wondering what keeps Mitchell and Cameron together? And weren't we all
wondering what a hottie like Gloria sees in a lump like Jay? Last week's
episode perfectly answered all those questions, and I'm guessing tonight
brings back the LOL, as Manny takes up fencing.
