SHANGHAI, Nov. 5, 2009 (Kyodo News International) -- Japanese teen phenom Ryo Ishikawa shot an even par 72 in the first round of the prestigious HSBC (NYSE:HBC) Champions in Shanghai on Thursday.

The 18-year-old Ishikawa, who has targeted finishing inside the top 35 at this $7 million World Golf Championship, made three birdies and as many bogeys at Sheshan International Golf Club and was tied in 38th place alongside compatriot Daisuke Maruyama and eight other players.

Komei Oda had the best opening round by a Japanese player, carding a 70 for a tie for 21st. Japanese money leader Yuta Ikeda shot a 1-over and Shingo Katayama had a 75.

American Nick Watney enjoyed an 8-under 64 to establish a two-shot lead. World No. 1 Tiger Woods shot a 67.
