OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/06/09 -- Canada's Transport Minister John Baird and the Honourable Rob Merrifield, Minister of State (Transport), today announced the appointment of Mr. Thomas A. Bennett to the board of directors of VIA Rail Canada Inc.

"Mr. Bennett's extensive experience in finance, business, marketing and management will be a great asset to the board and its mission going forward," said Baird.

"I am delighted that Mr.Bennett has agreed to offer his experience to VIA Rail," said Minister Merrifield. "His long and distinguished career in finance and marketing will undoubtedly serve him well as he takes up his duties."

Mr. Bennett's appointment is effective November 5, 2009, for a period of four years.

Mr. Bennett's 35-year business career has garnered him Canada-wide recognition as a business and marketing leader. He is a lifetime member of Great-West Life's President's Club and has received numerous awards for business success. Mr. Bennett is also very active in community and volunteer endeavours. For many years, he has lent his time and talents to help numerous organizations that benefit others, including the St. Patrick's Home Foundation, Kiwanis and Meals on Wheels.

The ministers also announced the reappointment of two current board members. Mr. Eric Stefanson of Winnipeg and Mr. David Hoff of Vancouver, British Columbia, will begin new four-year terms on January 25, 2010.

VIA Rail Canada Inc., a Crown corporation, was created in 1977 and operates Canada's national passenger rail service. The board of directors is responsible for overseeing the business activities and other affairs of the corporation.
