NINGBO, Nov. 8, 2009 (Xinhua News Agency) -- A symposium held by the Chinese mainland and Taiwan from Thursday to Sunday produced a common initiative on cooperation in agriculture, fishery and water resources fields.

The two sides will promote the development of new-type agriculture, encourage cooperation in agricultural biotechnology industry, and work to set up a long-standing consultative mechanism on agricultural cooperation, said the common initiative produced by the symposium, held first in Shanghai and then Zhejiang.

It said the sale of Taiwan farm produce on the mainland will be promoted, with an improving coordination mechanism and stable channels.

The two sides will also establish a reporting mechanism to share information on the quality and safety of agricultural products, said the initiative.

The two sides will also boost cooperation in sectors of intellectual property, investment, fishery and water resources, energy saving and emission reduction, green power development, and disaster prevention and reduction, the statement said.

The symposium was co-sponsored by 10 NGOs from both the mainland and Taiwan. More than 220 officials, experts and representatives from agriculture, fishery and water resources circles joined the meeting.
