MEXICO CITY, Nov. 8, 2009 (Xinhua News Agency) -- Floods and heavy rain in Eastern and Southeastern Mexico had caused at least 90 oil and natural gas wells to stop working, Mexican authorities reported Sunday.

Fernando Flores, manager of the Integral Asset of state-run oil company Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex), said oil production dropped by 56.2 percent, from 60,000 daily barrels to 26,280 daily barrels.

The wells that stopped working were located in the oil fields of Agua Dulce, Las Choapas, Moloacan and Ixhuatlan in Veracruz, as well as the field of Cardenas in Tabasco.

The pouring rains also kept about 1,500 Pemex's workers from commuting to work.

The rain affected 11 cities in Veracruz, and left some 18,000 people homeless and 20,000 houses damaged.
