ROYAL Bank of Scotland are dishing out free dollars and drinks to
Americans - while begging British taxpayers for more bailout cash.
US-based Citizens Bank and Charter One Bank, owned by RBS, are
offering $220 (pounds 132) to anyone who opens a new account. And
Citizens Bank, who have opened a branch in a Boston Dunkin Donuts,
are also offering free coffee.
Pressure group the Taxpayers' Alliance said last night it was
"insulting" while UK taxpayers' money is being used to prop up RBS.
But the bank said their offers lured in "tens of thousands" of
new customers. RBS needed a pounds 25.5billion injection of UK
Government funds last week and revealed plans to cut 3700 jobs.
But weeks beforehand, Citizens were staging a "cash grab" game to
celebrate the opening of a new cash machine. Players got as much
money as they could catch from the air.
MatthewElliot, of the Taxpayers' Alliance, said: "In the week
when every one of us was giving an extra pounds 500 per person to
RBS to keep it afloat, it's a slap in the face to existing UK
savers."
